It’s been a little while since I last wrote an article for this blog but I thought I would take advantage of the 150th anniversary of the death of Sir Charles Wheatstone, the inventor of the Stereoscope, to make up for lost time and write a longish piece about a rather special and rarely-mentioned use of Stereoscopy. I have wanted to write this article for a long time and although there is definitely room for improvement and expansion (it would need a whole book to cover the subject properly), I hope the following .pdf will give readers of this blog a sort of overview of the history of advertising in the stereoscope and some ideas as to what to look for if they are interested in digging deeper.
I had more to say, obviously, but time was of the essence as I had the 19th of October as a deadline. Also, if there is a book some day (either physical or digital), I need to save some material and some illustrations for it !
If you have suggestions about things I failed to mention, please feel free to send me an email.
I have no doubts there will quickly appear dozens of “experts” in the field in the very near future. It happens every time I publish a book or an article as it is definitely easier for some to “pinch” somebody’s work and get all the credit than to do the research themselves and credit the original author. Some people make a whole career of it ! As Wheatstone knew only too well.

How frustrating it is putting anything on the internet and having someone steal it and take the credit. Advertising with stereoscopy must be such a large and broad subject to cover; even with my limited knowledge I can think of several formats that were used for advertising. In any case, putting up this pdf is very generous, thank you.
